June business good for agents

BANGKOK, 6 July 2016: Association of Thai Travel Agents’ member companies handled 3,109,767 travellers during January to June, this year, at Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports representing a 13.73% increase from 2,734,423 during the same period last year.

ATTA released its data, Monday, based on fees member agencies pay to airports to provide a meet-and-greet service for international clients, but limited to travel through Bangkok.

The association president, Charoen Wangananont, said tourists entering the country through the association is growing fast driven by markets in Asia.

“Asia and ASEAN continue to play major roles for the country’s tourism…China is the main stimulator,” he said,

The government’s tourism policy aims to spread tourism revenue to secondary destinations, he added, a move that will diversify the country’s travel content and provide revenue for rural communities.

For the first six months of the year, China was the top supply market up 34.05% from 1,509,085 visits to 2,022,969 visits.

Although showing a decline of 25.57%, Russia ranked second with 126,570 visits compared to 170,056 visits during the same period last year.

The next top five markets were: Vietnam (110,536; +6.72%); India (99,447; +5.18%); and South Korea (84,651; +11.22%).

In June, there were 314,171 foreign tourists who travelled with association members through Suvarnabhumi Airport down 8.55% from 343,531 visits during the same month last year.

China was the top source of business in the sixth months of this year with 167,069 visits decreasing 10.12% from 185,886 visits.

Vietnam followed in second place with 29,528 visits down 7.06% from 31,771 visits during the same month last year.

India ranked third with 14,087 visits decreasing 8.51% from 15,398 visits.

South Korea was fourth posting 13,032 visits up 15.97% from 11,237 visits, while Japan in fifth with 12,021 visits dropped 10.69% from 13,460 visits.

The next top five markets in June were: Russia (8,633; +15.83%); Hong Kong (7,155; -17.74%); the United Kingdom (6,146; -0.29%); Taiwan (5,179; -45.50%); and Iran (2,325; +21.73%).

The association also reported 147,424 tourists had booked travel through member companies via Don Mueang Airport in June this year, up 58.11% from 93,244 during the same month last year.

China was also the top source market at the second gateway recording 124,147 visits improving 53.88% from 80,680 visits.

Vietnam was second with 12,365 visits growing 654.88% from 1,638 visits during the same month last year.

Indonesia ranked third recording 5,110 visits, an increase of 25.55% from 4,070 visits.

India in fourth place generated 1,392 visits up 41.90% from 981, while Malaysia in fifth place with 1,067 visits decreased 62.22% from 2,824 visits.

The next top five markets in June were: Japan (730; +26.74%); South Korea (670; -20.43%); Taiwan (408; +42.16%); the Netherlands (233; +100.00%); and UK (178; +2.30%)...
